I have a 75 gallon with an FX5 on it. I think its a tad overkill though. I think 1 FX5 per 100-125g is about right.

I would say its definitly overboard for a 55, if I had the cash I would invest in a bigger tank rather then a bigger filter.

Exactly. If you can afford an FX5 for a 55 g you can afford a bigger tank with maybe 2 AquaClear 110's or something

It's way too much for a 55G....I run one on my 75G and it's crazy. I'm going to change it over to a XP-3 and run it on my 125g.

Thanks all for your insight. Iv decided to go with an AC110 until i get my 90+ gallon as much as I wanted to get the FX5. I know im b-tching out, but this way i can save for my tank. Also, i'll be able to use the AC110 on my upgrade along with the FX5.

I would say get it. Because you know you'll get a bigger tank in the future. I had a 55 and bought a FX5 (yes overkill). Now I have a 210. FX5 and a sump filtration done. Get my point, you'll need it down the road. One less thing to buy. JM2Cents
