FX5 Intake - want to change

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't think this thread is useless at all. I hate my fx5 intake cause the bottom piece always gets knocked off, and it is ugly. Thanks to flagtail, and seeing the quality of his tank with the strainers, I think I'm going to take that route as well.

The users analogy was putting a new carburetor on a BMW was not going to make it better.

I went with the same analogy about the BMW but a different philosophy that yes I have seen first hand you can improve a BMW. BMW improves their cars every year actually . As aquarium equipment companies improve their products.

Since the Author of this thread isn't happy with a detail or two of the filter when it was purchased... and there was room to improve...

Then I guess you could see this as something that was "broke" and had room for improvement...

Since someone chimed in with a practical way to make the improvement he was looking for... The Authors filter can be improved beyond the original design... which confirms the analogy of the BMW being improved was completely applicable...

And since Tscarswell wasn't the one who brought up the BMW analogy, I guess I can't hold it against him that he had a perfect real life experience to correct the analogy...

This thread has proved quite useful to it's Original Author and anyone else with the same concern…

Yes this thread was very very useful for me :)

1) No shrimps gonna get stuck from the back of the FX5 strainer
2) The intakes pipes will look less bulky now
3) Turtle will not chew this strainer since the shrimp will not get stuck in the new strainer (i am assuming the new strainer will look like the eheim one lol)

The op is asking how to remove bulkiness of his fx5 intake, not what you have done to your car. If it was a question on how to make his filter run better, I can see..

The question has been answered, and my apologies for offending you over the internet.

I have changed both intake and return lines to 3/4"CPVC.
The intake comes to 1" off the tank bottom. Is capped, with allot of holes drilled in it. On occasion, food will get stuck in a hole, but the fish take care of that. I use 90deg over the tank rim, cut to fit tight.
The return ends with a street ell that is not glued, so I can move it for best water movement.
All Krylon painted black.
Works quite well for me.
BTW: I didn`t know anyone could win or loose in the sharing of information. I thought it would be just the right or the wrong of the information supplied.
Learn something new everyday.

It was an analogy. Never mind. The OP is happy and everyone that has completed English 1 knows I was not trying to brag about a car lol .

I dunno, BMWs are worth bragging about :) Just kidding.

Yea! i've been thinking about changing my Fx5 strainers for sometime now,i keep seeing carnivore pellets etc stuck in the grill at the back of the strainer...it pisses me off! I have to keep on putting my hand in the tank and removeing them.
