Hey folks, yesterday I did a wc/vac and I cleaned out my FX5, all was well but this morning I woke up and my FX5 was makeing the swooshing sound like air was leaking in. However it only dose it for about 5 sec then quiet for about 30 then it swooshes again. No air bubbels comeing out so I dont think there is an actual leak. I did however add a little baggie of peat in the top tray which made a slight hump in the media, could this be causing cavitation makeing the swooshing sound? too much media? There are NO leaks and NO air bubbels, just a intermittent swooshing sound.

I cleaned my Fx5 out last week and plugged it back in and got the same sound. I couldn't figure out what was wrong took it apart and made sure there were no leaks. Persistent that day and the next, but later that night it finally subsided. Back to being pretty quiet, hopefully that's all yours is doing?

Thanks man, I think I OD'd the filter on media, took it apart and removed some and no issues so far.

Glad you got it straightened out. When are people gonna see that aquarium pumps don't get cavitation ? Not to be a smart ass but I see a lot of people saying that fx5's get cavitation from fine pads etc.

i stack a load of media in my FX5 and it does not make that noise.. it only make it in the beginning when i first plug it in.. i dunnoz i havent heard it in a while

Howdy,

It's always a pleasure to read your input, but this one is a bit off:

Big words, wrong concept.

Vapor cavitation: "Rupture" of a liquid by overcoming tensile strength. Cavities are formed, which fill with vapor and gases. High energy is released upon collapse. Basically, you cannot reach that with an aquarium pump. Even in industrial water-hydraulic systems, this phenomenon does not easily occur below 120`F.

Reduction of Boiling point: You'd have to reach 0.03 atm to get water to boil at aquarium temp. Not gonna happen with any aquarium pump. This is even borderline for laboratory diaphragm pumps.

BUT
De-gassing/Outgassig: Is the principle you should refer to: Slight reduction in pressure causes release of dissolved gases based on vapor pressure and equilibration.

You should familiarize yourself with the science behind principles before you use such terminology. Otherwise, you make members believe you know what you're talking about ... ;)

Lets not get the debate started lets leave it at this. Anyone can go look at my eheim 2262 thread for more info. Sorry for derail.

Original Poster: Too much media may have been causing vibrations allowing air to build up and bubble in the top causing this swooshing. When the auto air release happens it should go away.
