FX5 Leaking, ideas?

How liberally do you apply the grease?

I make sure a thin layer of grease covers all the surface area, reinstall, then apply a thicker, goopy layer before reattaching it back to the canister body.

So here's what I discovered. I couldn't find the tube of grease that I linked, so I just waited on the new O-ring. The new one was substantially larger than the old, there was around a 1/4" gap when I put the two on top of each other. So even though my original O-ring was still in great shape, apparently it has shrunk over the five years of owning the filter. I'll probably start replacing it every year or so.

Anyway, no leaks now so all is good.

That's odd. I've never heard of an o-ring shrinking, but rather the opposite.

Did you buy this FX used?

Bought new around 4-5 years ago. The factory O-ring fits very snug while the replacement was pretty loose. Maybe they started manufacturing them differently, either way no more leak.

Yeah, your issue is probably the exact reason why they switched to a larger o-ring. Good to hear you got this resolved, but I still highly recommend lubing those O-rings next time you do maintenance on that FX

I'm betting that original o-ring used to be even smaller, and through time probably stretched which decreased the diameter(thickness).....causing a not so thorough seal and ultimately leakage

I quit removing the pump on my fx5 unless it began making noises because of this. I had an o ring leak that the lines connect to the top and came home to about 25 gallons on my floor and a damaged floor. I now replace all o rings every year cause $10 is cheap insurance

The filter always has sand in it so I have to remove it just about every time. The inlet for the FX5 is around 6" from the bottom but it still picks up a bit. Any higher and I doubt it would pick much waste up.
