how often should i change the media?

I normally just change out the filter floss; I never change the media.... but I change mine 1 sometimes 2 a month.

Also, for the filter floss, you can even rinse it out under the sink. I rinse mine out til it starts getting bad, then I replace it. For the filter media, I never replace, just occasionally rinse it in tank water if it's starting to get all yukky looking, to get all the gunk out. But don't over-rinse it, or use tap water.

As for the foam, rinse it in tank water. When it starts falling apart, then replace. Will probably take 10 years or more before it starts falling apart, lol.

With filters in general, bio media shouldn't be replaced. Just rinsed in tank water, and put back in. Mechanical filtration ranges, from filter floss which I just chuck and replace, to foams, that are rinsed like bio-media, and placed back in the filter. Chemical filter medias sometimes are thrown away (charcoal), rinsed and replaced (de*nitrate), and some need to be recharged (purigen).

I have seen the fx5 running in a LFS and it seems to be a very good filter and dose kick ass and clean it out once a month and throw the filter pad out when it still looks dirty after you cleaned it.

Just rinse in tank water? in the tank or out in bucket of tank water?

Have fun if you have a heavily stocked tank or messy fish, unless using some other type of media, using the blue polishing pads or the water polishing pads that are made for it you will be cleaning it every 2 weeks.
