Everyone says no but I have had best luck using pot scrubbies! I have 7 rays and one other filter also with scrubbies all are thriving and i still get away with 50 percent a week water changes!!!!

Not enough people know that when you use carbon it must be replaced periodically or else once exhausted it will start releasing everything its absorbed back into the water.
I have heard this, and personally do not use carbon, but I have always been curious as to what people think it will leech back into the water. I don't use it because I don't want to spend the money on it,and have crystal clear water without it.But for the people how do,what do you think it is removing from the water, and what could it possibly put back into the water that would harm the fish?

Fishbum,

Good question and in the process doing further research I found out that carbon only gets saturated to the point to where it will no longer absorb toxins but it will not release them back into the water. (thats what I get for repeating information without researching it) One of ways to remove what it has absorbed is to do whats called Thermal Regeneration where the carbon is super heated in a vacuum so that it doesn't get oxygen and burn and another is called Supercritical Fluid Regeneration... Not going to explain it but you can read about it HERE Back on topic though, carbon great for removal of meds, but a waste of money otherwise. Water changes are best for removal of what the beneficial bacteria cant remove.

i tried the polish pad on my xp3 and i have to clean the filter every 2 week so i gave up.. i got a FX5 and i dont dink im get it anymore.. my tank did not even build enought bacteria yet and i have to clean it.. so i dunoz about polish pad. it keeps ur water clear but you have to replace them alot..
