I find that wadding up the blue bonded filter media in each tray does an excellent job at polishing the water but they dont clog nearly as quickly as the fine white or blue pads that fluval makes for it. Besides that the cost is approximatly 1/4 the cost of the fluval media. The sponges themselves are great for mechanical filtration but are also biological filters.

I use the prefilter media in the top tray and biomax in the middle and bottom. I place the carbon over the media in the middle and bottom tray, then use a layer of poly fiber as fine filter pads on top of all trays to keep the media from premature clogging.
