I'm thinking about buying an FX5 off ebay to run on my 220g tank once its finally set up.

My question is for people who currently own FX5's. What kind of media do you run in it, and how much of that media did it take to fill up the filter?

Thanks!

I put scrubbies in mine. I want to say there are about 9-10 per tray.

So neither of you use the original sponges it comes with? Or do you use those media's in addition to the sponges it comes with?

I use the stock sponges in mine, along with all 3 trays filled with Ceramic Bio rings.. It wasn't cheap to load with media though, i think 5-6 of the small boxes of Fluval bio rings from lfs.. :(

X2

I have the stock sponges and in the middle I have bioballs (to lazy to switch for Ceramic Rings). Long ago I thought BioBalls was the better way to go plus I wanted the most current possible in my tank.

I rely on my filter socks for debree :D

I do have a bunch of scrubbies at home, although they're meant for my sump. I suppose I could spare a box to fill the FX5 though.

I could also just go with some Pond Matrix, I think, if I put it in bags. Its not too expensive, although I think I'd need about 8-10L of it...

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I have the standard filter foams that come with it. The scrubbies are for bio.

I used nothing but ceramic media (in addition to the outer sponges). Tried scrubbies one time, hated it! Clogged too easily and when they did, they reduced the flow a lot.
