FX5 media question...

I used nothing but ceramic media (in addition to the outer sponges). Tried scrubbies one time, hated it! Clogged too easily and when they did, they reduced the flow a lot.

Hey J did you use the larger ceramic rings?

When i set up mine i plan on using just the larger ceramic rings in all 3 trays along with the stock sponges.

My FX5 Setup:
-White coarse sponges around the outside (the ones that comes with it)
-A blue fine filter pad on top of Matrix in all 3 trays. The matrix is free in the trays, not bagged.

Just FYI, regular Matrix has pieces small enough to fall through the trays (very few are small enough, but still kind of annoying).

stock outer sponges, bio-bale mixed with seachem matrix. high GPH sponge pre-filter on the intake.
