Biomax is made of ceramic, while bio balls are made of a plastic material. Why can't bio balls be used in an FX5? I don't understand how the efficacy of bioballs can be questioned when compared to Biomax. I would think that both products would allow for a satisfactory result. Are you implying that biological bateria is more attracted to ceramic, versus plastic?

Bio balls would be fine and in fact depending on the bioload a better choice since they are less prone to biofilm clogging than finer pore ceramics.

Its not that the BB is more attracted to ceramic, but ceramic rings/media has a much larger surface area/volume than bio balls. Since the internal volume of even the largest of canisters is tiny compared to even small wet/dry set ups, the ceramic media allows for a larger ammount of BB to be cultured in a smaller area thus makeing it a "better" option for canister filters over bio balls, esp if you have a heavy bio load.

all biomax even if its the only filter on the tank?

you could do that and it would work great, but I personally only put ceramic rings in the bottom 2 trays and leave the top tray open for whatever. The occasional bag of carbon, but usually I just pack it with poly fill and it keeps the water looking great and the poly catches the smaller junk the sponges miss which keeps the rings from getting dirty so fast.

ok thanks, its is on a 150g with 3 peacock bass and a arowana bioload should be to bad, but my water is still a little hazy its driving me nuts!!!
