I have a fx5 I bought used with a pretty random assortment of media. I want to re stock it. What have you guys found to be the best media mix for this filter and it what order? Also how many boxes of media are needed to fill one tray? Thanks

Top tray: Fluval pre-filter (2 boxes)

Middle tray: Bio-max (2 boxes)

Bottom tray: 1 box of bio-max, 200ml of Purigen and a blue fluval polishing pad.

I kept stock sponges and filled all 3 trays with ceramic rings. If this is your onlu source of Mechanical, I would use 1 tray with Mechanical and 2 tray's w/Bio plus all the square sponges.

Prefilter really doesn't catch much, I took mine out cuz there would only be a few pieces of bigger waste in them and the more media you have the less gph, I've heard of purigen absolutly killing flow... All 3 trays biomax or chem stars and stock sponges.

6 months then you "recharge" it with bleach so it lasts forever. But its not necessary, its good for certain applications, and if you have a lot of fish then yea it'll help. Just try all BIO media for BB and stock sponges, see how you like it, bet your tank will!
