The Fx5 is silent from my experience. I had two of them and both were silent. Only a very slight hum comes from mine. The Filstar Xp4 I had was louder than the Fx5.
OMG! I just cleaned mine on Monday because of Microbubbles! and mine is new..All I have is Eheim Eco substrate and 1 floss pad in each level.. I had to clean the floss pads and now no more microbubbles!! I Never had a problem like this with my Rena XP4 and that is packed to gills with media!!! I guess its one of the FX5 flaws! JMO
The flaw in the Fx5 is using a very efficient impeller, more efficient than most other filters on the market, having a high flow rate, (550 GPH MORE than the Rena Xp4) and having a small surface area in the center.
I have 2 FX5's and 1 is packed with filter floss and I don't have any issues with micro bubbles unless its been a while between cleaning, which is rare. As far as noise they are very quiet.
I have my fx5 on my 265 and its 12" below water level I checked the motor it looked good and gasket. My new one arrived today it's now hooked up to my 190 well see in the morning how they are. That one is right underneath tank 3 1/2 feet below. Right now there running with only fine fx5 pad in both of them. There work great and are quiet but those damn bubbles.
must be drawing in air from somewhere, and if there was a tiny pin whole on the suction side, it prolly wouldn't leak because of the vacuum on it. thats really all I can think of. best of luck
Well last night I set up the new fx5 with only fine filter pad in it the morning no micro bubbles
The other one had Micro bubbles again both set up the same.
Maybe I have a bad one only thing I can think of
I'm going to swap hoses to see if any difference for tonight
