Hi. I just switched a 55 with Mbuna over from gravel to sand. I love the sand and the fish seem to be enjoying it. The parameters are all good. However, I have a Fluval 305 on the tank with 2 sponge filters and am dissatisfied with the poop left behind in the tank. I just ordered another FX5 off ebay ($219/delivered) !!! I intend to put it on the Mbuna tank. Can you advise me on whether this is too much filtration for a 55? I'm hoping it will be powerful enough to suck up the solids better. What do you think?

I kept a FX5 on a 35 gallon for awhile (about a month to get it seeded) and there was still some "poop" on the bottom. lol. I kept a flowerhorn in there and he did just fine.

IMO there will always be stuff that didnt get sucked up but also there can never be to much filtration lol.

Put a powerhead down towards the bottom to help things along.

I've never used a powerhead before. Are they simple? Do they make their own power or are they powered by an outside air pump? With all the habitat necessary for an African tank, it creates some definite "dead" spaces in the corners.

I setup a FX5 on my 55G 2 months ago and it works perfect. Water has never been so clean and clear before, very seldom is there any waste on the bottom, most everything get pushed or pulled toward filter intake. Also running a Aquatech HOB filter with pothos for nitrate reduction. I use to only have 2 AC70s and a Fluval 304 and friends have commented how crystal clear the water is compared to before. I got my FX5 for $234 shipped from Amazon.

Good God, I thought having one on my 125 was overkill :D

I agree there is no such thing as to much filtration. however it depends on the type of fish you are keeping as the outlet of a FX5 can be powerful for some species. I have a FX5 on my 180g with a HOB AC110. I am thinking of putting another FX5 but I keep asking myself if I really need it.

had a 305 on my 55 for about 8 months.. my girlfriend and a bad habit of going to the lfs and buying new fish every other week.. next thing i knew i had 38 fish in my 55 (over stocked was an under statement). had no choice but to put a fx5 on there.. a few months of that running i finally convinced her to let me get my 20y.o. 75 gallon tank up and running (which never had water in it used for my iguanas when i had them).. took some of the fish out of the 55 and transplanted them to the 75.. put the FX5 on the 75, and the 305 back on the 55.. water is always clear on both tanks.. as for the poop.. well there is always some somewhere in the tank.. you will never get is all..
