on the contrary.. I mean what else would you use to keep o-rings conditioned with that is safe? O-rings and any stretched rubber certainly don't last as long and will end up cracking sooner if they aren't properly and regularly treated. It isn't really necessary with canisters though (in my experience) cause they're in a moist environment and should last a few years before any signs are shown- plus replacement seals are readily available for just a few bucks..

I use either regular Vaseline, plumbers o-ring grease or any silicone grease suitable for potable water.

pretty sure your supposed to use silicone based grease. Vaseline will break down rubber over time. I imagine its probably a very long time though

removed the motor. cleaned and flushed it. really no grit or sand present. Running smoothly for now. I guess I will just keep it to once a year maintenance.
