I'm weighing my options on filtration for my 240 gallon arowana tank. Fx5 or sump? .. I currently have a canister that is helping untill I add more filtration. I have never built a sump and have no idea where to start. Also my tank has a 4" lip around the top of the tank. Note pic.

Any help would be great. I looked into building one on you tube and I do not fully understand. Plus I do not want to flood my house if I mess up or screw up during cleaning.

Actually you want to see how your stand is build and whether it has the right openings to host a big sump...

There are currently 3 thread on filters...with different options, you can check it out(ignore the flame wars).

For Fx5, I think you will need at least 2.

If you have room, i vote sump. maximum filtration for half the price of one fx5. Essentially all you need is the put a few baffles in, add media and return pump.....done.
Maybe look into fluidized bed sumps.
Just imo, depends on how much work you want to do

Sump tank is the most efficient. I have tried almost all kinds of filtration systems, but I find sump tank is still the best.

Whiel a sump can be really nice. i find using heavy plantings keeps my tanks ultra clean. i run a 55 with no filter, all eb it a light bio load of just two fish. the real question is how do you want everythign to look when said and done. my large tank 300 gal, runs just a fx5 and no plants. with three messy cats, wallago included.
