If your fish looks like its struggling to thread water then you need to make adjustments to the return flow. Throw some flakes in there to see how the current carries.

Yes and no. You can't actually over filter a tank, although nitrifying bacteria will only populate based on the bio load (they can only grow if there's a food source!) you can't go wrong by having plenty of space for them to grow in as you may or may not increase your bioload in the tank.I swear I read that you can only biologically filter up to the tanks capacity. over filtering would have to be mechanical no?
Nitrate concentration in L Tanganyika in the zones where fish are present, is less than 1ppm, so if nitrate readings in a tank are over 1ppm, you can not be over filtering.
Unless you're using a nitrate removing media or specific nitrate removing filter, general filters do not remove nitrates...that's why we do water changes
