i just cleaned up my fx5 today, and dropped in some ceramic rings. however after i put that thing back 2gether and plug in the power, noticed that there's strange swirling noise. even after the 2 mins "sleep" time, it still does the same thing and no/little water comes out from the outlet pipe.
i was afraid that the pump is having some problem, but after i tried it w/o any media, the filter did fine. pumped out water like normal. therefore, i thought my media tray was miss placed or someting like that, but after i took it apart, checked, then put it back 2gether, it started to do the same thing. :irked:
any1 ever experienced this be4? anything i can do? help plz!!!! :nilly:
o, and i thought the media was too full, blockin the water flow, so i even down sized the media, but still the same thing...wth

Stupid question but, did you prime it first?
I dont have any exp with FX5's but thats all I can honestly think of.
I'm sure someone else will come along and help though.

thx man, fx5 is pretty much self priming, but i did think that mite be the problem too, so i tried. i filled it up to the top, then closed and powered it, but it doesn't work either.

aiite, just tried to put only 1 chamber in the filter, and it works fine...but after i put back all three chambers it just doesn't work again...wtf

im not getting any power at all and i did the same things you did im so mad that i cant figure this out. of course fluval is closed till monday arghhh!:irked:

this happened to me, i shortened the hose for some odd reason and it worked, or take off the side thing and clean the impeller....

do you have that crappy polishing pad in there? they clog super fast and that could cause it

ermm dunno if you tried this, fill it 3/4 the way.... attach the pipes and open the INPUT 1st then the output and u should get bubbles coming out of the outlet in the tank as the air is pushed out
wait for this to stop and then turn it on... it the noise u hear is like a powerhead with an air tube on it u just have air in ur filter... give it a little shake... leave it for an hour then check.. granted u have a decent output flow rate

Do any of ur hoses have loops in them? if so undo them

Sounds like you have a clog. Too much filter media will cause the pump to get too warm, so it slows down (to prevent damage) and the whole thing runs like crap. Happened to me on one of my 3. Solution for me was to remove filter media (scrubbies) that had clogged up. That is probably why it works fine with only one chamber filled.

the only problem is its a fluval! junk!! for the same cost or less you can build your own trickle (wet dry) ten times better in EVERY WAY! maintenance takes 3-5 min, just change out the filter floss, thats it! and i do that with the filter still running. i reluctantly tried one a few years back and now have one on ALL my tanks, even my 33!. its the only way to fly
