ok today i did a waterchange and when i turned both the fx5s on one was ok and the other was not.
basicaly it is pumping like someone is turning a switch on and off constantly.
now if i close all the valves to the pipework and seal the unit from the tank it pumps fine, i also stripped it and it was pumping fine but as soon as the outlet is opened it starts again.
one thing i noticed is that when it is turned on it stays on and does not turn off and reset itself after 2 minutes as it should to expel the air.
does anyone have any thoughts or has anyone had the same problem.

well seen as no one new what this is i stripped it down and took it to bits.
i removed the pump and ran it in water and it was doing the same under no load.
the pump is pumping then stopping slightly then pumping again so its either the impellar or the pump unit.
either way it needs to be replaced by hagen.
i will swap some stuff out of one of my other fx5s to determine which one and let eveyone know.

atleast you have a back up filter... switch to a eheim large canister....great canisters for large tanks

i have 3 fx5s so i am ok at the moment but still need it sorting.
i can't fit pro 3's in my cabinet and thats the only eheim i would use on my tanks hence the fx5s. the tank is in the iving room and my G/F would not look too kindly on filters outside the tank LOL.

besides this problem how's the FX5 been treating you??? I was going to buy one ...

apart from this it has been fine along with my other 2 so i will reserve my judgment until i see what the customer service is like to get this resolved.
i dont mind things being faulty although it is a pain but if they sort it asap then its fine by me.

do keep us posted on the progress with this situtation... I'm curious to there customer service and how this is handled... might be a desiding factor cause they are pretty cheap and I could use one for my 90

well tonight i stripped it again along with another of my fx5s and swapped out the parts.
its the pump that has gone and not the impeller, what is happening is the pump when it first starts on an fx5 pumps on and off quickly for around 10-20 seconds too perge air then pumps constantly for 2 minutes then stops to release all the air into the tank.
the pump seems to be staying on the first 10-20 second cycle and not changing to the constant pumping then off before stating again.
the pump pumps ok but the electronics are leting it down.
i will contact hagen uk tomorrow first by phone and if i get no joy from customer services i will email them.
stay tuned.
