I have only had my tank up for a few weeks. It has two FX5s. I did a water change, and plugged everything back in. Neither FX5 would work, although I could hear the motors working. I took them both down, cleaned the impellers, and this did the trick. But neither impeller was really all that dirty.

How often do you guys have to clean your FX5's impellers to keep them working? I have 2 XP3s, and neither has ever stopped working due to a dirty impeller.

Ive had mine runing for a year know and have never cleaned my impellers.

Do you shut off your FX-5 durring wc's? I leave them running.
Do you use the strainers?

Also they usually take a while to start up when plugged back in and you have to make sure the right amount of water is in there. If you didnt already know that.

I have been unplugging them during water changes. I have been doing a couple WCs a week because after transferring the fish over from the old tank, I have been going through a mini cycle. I assumed that enough water (the required two gallons) would stay in the filters during the WCs, unless too much was somehow flushed out??

Maybe I will just keep them running during water changes now.

Akabir, what strainers are you talking about?

I have two on my tank also, I shut them off during waterchanges twice a week, and when i plug them back in they turn on for a minute, turn off for a minute, then turn on to let air bubbles collect and push them out. Are you sure you are just not noticing that minute of prime/airbubble collection?

Yes, I'm sure that's not what it was. They didn't even turn on at all. Just to be sure it wasn't the programmed 2 minutes off, I left them plugged in for a few minutes, and nothing.

I'm doing a water change right now, and to avoid this happening again, I decided to leave my FX5s on. The major splashing and water agitation is putting so many air bubbles in the water that it really seems to be stressing out my fish.

Does anyone else do their water changes with the FX5s (or other large cansiters) on?

I always leave them on

It seems like a lot of people do. I'm probably worrying for nothing. It really stressed out one of my big Cichla. The others seemed to be ok with it.
