One thing I changed though was the the two way outlets on the outtake hose. I didn't like the low pressure so I went and got a 90 degree elbow to replace it and it pretty much doubled the pressure. Only downfall to that is after awhile they will fall off so I need to use rubber bands to keep them on and every once in awhile I need to replace the rubber bands.

Can you take a photo of what you're talking about? I don't follow what you're explaining.

Really the only other thing I don't like is when you take the hose off to clean it you need to use a towel because it always spills some water.

Yeah, I hate that too. I have two on the tank in my bedroom and it drives me nuts that even that little bit of fish water ends up on the carpet.

I wonder if maybe turning the dials to stop the flow then using the purge valve a bit would lead to a low enough water level that it wouldn't do that.

At my last place I used the purge valve a few times to empty the tank, but once I realized I could just run two pythons simultaneously into the shower drain that ended up being way faster.

When I get around to setting up my 220 properly I'm going to have 2 FX5s on it and will T off the return on one of them with a ball valve I can use for emergency draining through the 1" hose. I figure that'll be nice and quick. Right now it's set up in such a way that I can only reach the tank with one python, which just takes absolutely forever to drain it.

I've had mine nearly 4 years now and am happy with it. I changed the foam provided as I thought it was rubbish-replaced it with 30 ppi and the water is much better.

My only gripe is that the impellor unit is a pain in the a.. to clean. I hate having to unscrew the unit each time. This is where Eheims win hands down (I also have a 2078 and cleaning this is much quicker and easier)

The owner of my LFS is a devout Eheim man and told me that the FX5 wouldn't last a year before it'd start to fall apart as he felt it wasn't robust enough. i occasionally remind him this when I speak to him :grinno:

I agree about the foam. I was cleaning mine the other day and the scrubbies and bio media were filthy and the foam that's supposed to do the mech was barely dirty at all.

Did you get 30ppi in that shape or just random shape that you wedged in to fit?

Eheims are great for bio but if you need a lot of flow the FX5 kicks their asses.

I bought a large sheet of it-cut to the same length as the Fluval foam but made it higher. This I feel gets a snug fit between the baskets and also prevents any bypass. Cleaned it yesterday and the amount of rubbish that came out of all of them was amazing. I agree with you that the standard Fluval foam hardly did the job at all

I don't think you should use the purge valve as a drip system when the tank is running. The entire canister is pressurized. You would most likely not like what happen if you open the purge valve while the FX5 is operating.

You know the gray nozzle on the outlet hose were the water comes out of the two nozzles that you can adjust to different directions. Take that off go to a hardware store like Lowes or were ever and buy a 90 degree PVC elbow for like 50 cents. Can't remember the thickness if your interested I'll see if I can find out. You would be surprised how much more pressure comes out the outlet this way. If your still confused let me know and I'll take a picture of my setup.
