well i noticed a lot of questions about the fx5 setup so heres my setup and performance

i have had my fx5 for 2 months now and i broke it down for its first cleaning today.

its setup on a 180 gal with lots of cichlids & lots of waste

in the top tray i filled it up with carbon. i like to use carbon for order control, although it is only effective for 3 weeks or so i kept it in there for 6 weeks
i figure after its absorbent period it will grow bb bacteria just like anything else in the filter. + plus i don't believe that it leaches stuff back into the water (lack of data).

in the second and third tray i crammed them full of ceramic rings.
now i did not use any type of filtering pads what so ever.

the brake down
the first (top) tray was dirty, well the dirtiest, the foam was filled with waste almost black, and the carbon inside a filter bag was pretty dirty as well.
the second tray foam was not that bad comparied to the first, and the third was almost clean.
now the rings in the second and third trays were dirty, but i simply put them in my sump and swished them around a bit and they were clean.

now i cleaned the foam with a powerspray in my shower and they were clean in minutes.

so with my configuration i feel this filter has worked as good as i could of imagined
now the only changes i would make and did make was added a filter pad over the media in the top tray, i simply cut a bonded blue and white pad to size and placed it on top of the media. this is to keep the media cleaner. i imagine i will have to brake down the canister sooner this way, but when that time comes i will evaluate the effectiveness of the pad and see if it was worth the early brake down.

when first restarting the filter i notice a reduction of flow but after some time and a couple of restarts to purge air bubbles were back up to my previous flow.

well that's my setup and hopefully this will be helpful to at least one person

when are u suppose to change the 6 side basket sponges?

when they fall apart, you can rinse them out. hot water helps

what do u clean every 2 weeks!?!

the sponges/micro filtration pad. any longer and my filter starts getting clogged. with one single layer of micro pad on my tank, it clogged in 2 weeks. its on a 75g. granted, thats faster than normal. i personally just couldnt wait more than 2 weeks before im opening it up and checking things out.

the foam inserts are just like the ones from an ac110 and those lasted forever so i would expect the same

The foam last for many many years. Its not them breaking down you have to worry about, although this does happen after say 7-10 years. Its them deforming over time, whether its from cleaning, clogging or whatever else could do it.

The Fx5 is only bypass free as long as the sponges are tightly sealing against the top tray. I say tight becuse when the filter turns on, I don't really know if the flow and/or pressures in the canister will allow the sponges to deform while in operation enough to cause bypass. I saw one fx5 where the guy didn't take could care of it, and when I broke it down to have a look, the sponges where not even touching the basket above. There was about 1/16" - 1/8" or so gap between all the sponges.

I also heard of one guy that let his filter go for to long, all the sponges were black he said and the filter was bypassing. I am going to guess that the clogging reduced the pressure behind the sponges to a point where they deformed and allowed water to flow right by them through the top.

Keep an eye on that.

Gives you a chance to buy some 20ppi foam from SwissTropicals.com. Cut them to fit snug and your have a small particle filter with tons of mechanical surface area. The guy was able to send my samples of his 20 and 30 ppi foam. Its excellent quality. 20 ppi is all you need.
