Just got one of these 2 weeks ago, been running fine, BUT THEN,
all day today, every 5 seconds it makes a sound like a straw sucking up the ends of a drink.
I unplugged the filter a few times so that the sequence would start over again but this has not helped?
This is my 1st FX5.
Any Idea why this is????
And can this be remedied????
THANX.

Make sure it's not sucking in air from anywhere

might be air in the system.

yea mine is fine it takes a few to get the air out make sure all youre hoses are tight and there is no bubble stones or power head bubbles near the intake.

yea every 24 hours so it takes awhile make sure all non submersible fitting are air tight that is the first thing also i use the old gm tighting sequence on my lid a criss cross pateren

Problem was the polishing pad.
- as soon as I took them out, everything was fine.

How do you have your FX5 Layered with media?

It should be set up with BIO-Max media on the bottom, then (1) one Filter Polishing pad on top of that so as the most purest water hits the Bio media.

Second Tray can be layered with (1) Polishing pad instead or the bottom by choice. Only use (1) one! in either bottom or middle tray. Not two or three of them. This is not how it works. In the second tray you can put your Fluval Zero-Carb Charcoal media bags by themselves or with (1) filter polishing pad.

TOP basket tray should have a Fluval Blue-Filter Pad (1) only one of these. You can also throw in some peat-moss or other media of choice.

Remember! (Only use one filter pad in the fluval FX5 such as one blue pad and one filter polish pad, never load the basket with (2) two or three pads.

The White Filter Polishing pad should be replaced every 7-14 days.. check flow rate, these filters super clean the water and get clogged faster.

Hope this helps.. let me know if you have any more questions on your new FX5.. its such a great filter, I am so happy to maintain mine when the time comes.. so easy!

I actually quit using the polishing pad altogether in mine. It would get dirty so fast and cause the air bubble problem. A good rule of thumb too is when it is time to clean the sponges you will start having air get expelled into the tank. At least that is what mine does. Then I just take the sponges out and rinse them really well and everything is great. Other than that a damn nice filter and bulletproof.

Got mine off eBay for $160 shipped to my door fully loaded. Wish I would have bought 2 of them for that price.

I agree with the theory but fluval, specifically with the Fx5, says to use polishing pads on the bottom. Dont know why.
