I have taken this used FX5 and have clean it as much as I could, I have even run it in a tank that I have outside that isn't being used for anything. So I know I need to replace the pads inside but how do you clean the baskets so that nothing is on them? I have even put it through the dishwasher no soap and still has some saltwater material on it.. what to do>>>

I bought a used fx5 that had been used in saltwater and I ran it with some non iodized salt in a bucket and change the water and added more salt. I did that for four days and rinsed and put in my freshwater tank. There was still some white calcium clumps on the baskets about pin headsize but thy never come off and it never hurt my fish. You can getnon iodized salt from the grocery store cause it won't harm freshwater fish. Good luck pm me if you have any other questions.

Thanks I even pressure wash it and then put it in the dishwasher and it's better but I guess I'm just over worry.....

A warm water and vinegar solution will remove any salt residue from the filter.

When i bought my 240 it came with a fx5. The 240 used to be a salt water setup, all i did was rinse out the sponges and baskets several times. I ended up discarding all the old media and putting in new ceramic rings.

I just rinsed off the excess build up and started using it. Over time what ever was left after I rinsed it off seemed to disappear over time.

No I have clean it pretty darn well and now it's starting to look alot cleaner and ready for media and new sponges..... thanks everyone!!!
