Just aquired (sp?, tired) an FX5.

Bought bare media for it aswell will this setup work to get pristine water conditions?

Top tier:
Polish Pad
Fine Pad
Polyfilter
[MAYBE a small single layer of pre-filter]

Middle tier:
Polish Pad
Carbon
Pre-Filter rings

Bottom tier:
Polish Pad
Fine pad
BioMax

Which is best to go ontop:grinno:
Fine(Blue) or Polish(White)

Thanks all!

IMO, too many pads and not enough biomedia....but, that's me.

Agreed.

On mine I have :

Fine pad on very bottom. The rest of the canister is filled with pot scrubbies, then its topped off with a polishing pad.

It all depends on what other filters you have (if any) and what they are filled with, and the tank size and stock as well...

take out the pads from the 2nd tier and 3rd. load up with bio max or equivalent. i use this with oscars and get pristine results. those pads clog up imo and you end up doing more extra work then you need to.

In my FX5 i have the two bottom baskets full of bio-max. the top basket usually has bio-max in it as well, but sometimes i use it for carbon or phos. remover. no need for extra mechanical pads, the FX5 comes with enough on the outside of the baskets.

What about top fine pad and polishing pad, middle bio max, bottom pre filter in the first half and bio max in the top half? It would not be too hard to change the polish and fine filter pads if they are on top

Using the fine 'polishing pads in the FX5 will clog the canister very quickly due to the high water flow. I run all bio-media in the center baskets and rely on the outer foam in all of our FX5's. The tanks look great and I only servace them every three months. IMO mixing media...unless it's done to correct a speciffic problem... is a waste of time and money. The FX5 is a mechanical filtration beast in stock form...it dosn't need any additional pads but the extra bio-media is a welcome addition.

As everyone else has said...No need for the foam. I have 2 fx5's and both have bio media in 2 baskets and 1 basket of a mix of pre-filter and bio. I have found that adding purigen to the top basket REALLY polishes the water.

I'll secound the Purigen recomendation. I have it all of our filters one place or another.

I bought loads of the BioMax so I can load #2 #3 with them.

Thing is, I want to keep debris to a minimum..
I thought the overloading on Blue/white would do this..

Getting great ideas from the thread guys, thanks
