70g, never change my media

my buddy had 2 in his 180 that had about 9 pbass hich were all over a foot. i was mechanical and the other was biological. we changed out the filter media every month. doesnt take to long a few minutes per filter

depending on your stock, one FX5 and a couple sponge filters should be just fine on a 180. set it up, run it and if you think it's not enough filtration add an other canister or more sponge filters. adding filtration is nearly never a bad thing.

How often do u guys change ur sponges?

The sponges in the Fx5 are pretty solid. I have not needed to buy new ones yet. I would say once they start to break apart it's time for new ones. I clean my Fx5's once a month.

Another note in one of my Fx5's I have the sponges that go around the filter and in the middle I use bio balls. It workes really well. In the other one I also have the normal sponges but then I have those polishing pads to keep the water clear plus the other normal media. Works well. Both are connected to my two overflows useing custom piping. I don't use the normal filter hoses it comes with.

i clean the mechanical filtration foam pads that come with the FX5 about every other month. i used to let it go longer when the tanks they were on were stocked lighter.

on my 210 i have 2 FX5's and 2 sponge filters run on a single fusion 600 air pump. i squeeze out the sponge filters about every other water change and switch off using the backflush on each of the FX5's to do the water changes each week. and i pull one or the other open every month and either squeeze out the foam pads in tank water or replace them depending on how nasty they are. i recently replaced the foam pads in both FX5's so i probably won't need to for awhile.. i've only ever replaced them 3 or 4 times before.
