Well my xp3 finally died and so I have an fx5 on its way. I'm assuming it won't come with any media. So what's everyone's recommendation for media. I was just planning on moving my seachem matrix rocks from the xp3 but what about the other baskets? The tank is 125 with 5 silver dollars 1.5-2", 2 oscars 3-4", and 1 male convict 2-3". Thanks

I wouldn't recommend regular matrix, small pieces can get through the bottom of the basket and into the impeller.

Seachem pond matrix all three baskets buy it on Amazon . I ran that in my FX5 for over a year no pads works great water is crystal clear.

i'd definitely have to agree with here, i use seachem pond matrix and I think its fantastic, for the surface area and price you can't go wrong

So without pads and just seachem what's involved in cleaning the filter. Do you rinse the rocks or just dump the cannister or what?

The foam pads are in the outer ring of the FX5.

Kreep, forget about what you know about XP filters or any others with motors on top as this fx-5 works very differently. and from what I read, allocate extra time for cleaning it, but you'll get extra clear water in exchange.

I take out the foam pads and put the media right back into my Fx5 while I am cleaning the foam. I never take it out of the trays I clean mine about every 2 months takes about 15 minutes.
