Hi guys! So I'm thinking of going with an fx5 for my 100 gallon. Overfiltering, monster style Since this is my first canister, I've got a few questions.

Where's the best place to buy one used?

How, and how often, do you clean it? How often do you rinse the filter media?

Filter media...suggestions? What media should be used, and in what order?

You can get a new one for 240$ on eBay or drfostersmith.

I run all bio (api chem stars) and sponges, clean every few months, shake bio in tank water, spray canister and sponges out with a hose.

Over filter monster style would be two eheim 2262 on your 100...

j/k; yeah FX5 would work fine and listen to F1 on FX5...

I cant believe I'm saying this but yes, listen to F1 j/k he knows his stuff. The FX 5 will work, how well does the sponge work for polishing? I had a buddy run dual FX5s on his 350 and his water was clear but I never asked what mech media if any he used.

There are a few people in your area that are selling a fx5 for around $150-$200 with all trays of Bio. With your stock of fish, I would do two trays of media and the top tray with the blue pad.

Craigslist. Got 3 from there ranging from 125-140 and brand new one of eBay for 150.00(seller had a mix up)

I use whatever came with the sale. Ended up with bio balls, fluval ceramics, fluval prefilter, polishing pads that I don't use due to clogging.

For cleaning open it up take out the foam on the side and rinse it with same water in your tank. Don't rinse your ceramics or whatever you using. Unless clogged up.

Yeah man enjoy your fx5 have 4running atm usually takes me 4hours to do all 4.

How do you know when the foam pads on the side need to be rinsed out?

Also, what media & how much do I need? I've never had a canister before, so I have no idea...

Well i use to have fx5 good filters for the money but, how often to clean? Depends how much stock you keep in the tank. How often you feed. what you feed. And the rising of the pads i would say onces a month don't put the.polishing pad at the.bottom because it.will clog the filter... But anyhow go with a real filter wetdry no maintenance just change or rince the pad and change the carbon from time to time but anyway good luck
