How do you know when the foam pads on the side need to be rinsed out?

Also, what media & how much do I need? I've never had a canister before, so I have no idea...
on cans you use flow as a reference for cleaning .... when the output slows considerably its time to clean...

I'm getting mine off ebay.

Thanks! :)

Still need to know how much and what kind of media to get..

I think fx5 is shipped w/ media......if not.. go with ceramic noodles and any kind of sponge (they make big black ones..similar in shape to ac110 pads)that you can cut to fit...or do blue /white bonded...from petsmart(but this will need replacing in a year or so)....

also on an fx5 flow slowing down might be hard to see in some cases ..so,even if it doesnt look slow ...clean the pads at least every 2-3 months

i have 2 fx5's on my 140gallon.. both are filled as followed...

top trays - fluval bio max fine filter pad
middle tray - fluval bio max and fine filter pad
bottom tray - seachem pond matrix and fine filter pad

all together i have 3300g of fluval bio max, and 4litres of seachem pond matrix and a 1ftx12ftx1" fine filter pad roll creates 40 pads for my fx5's 12"square pad creates 4 filter pads.... and one fx5 holds 5.9litres of media, so almost 2litres of media in each tray, ad i only clean my sponges and fine filter pads out when i notice it blow micro bubbles or reduced flow and my bio stuff i never touch it as the fine filter pads catch everything before it touchs anything else

hope that helps

I just purchased a FX5. From all the research I did it seemed like endless possibilities. At the end of the day, I took the simple route of buying 6 boxes of biomax and only using that. I also purchased the polishing pads and the blue pads which I plan on only using periodically as it is needed.

Some advice. I have used hang on the back filters (specifically emperor 350,400) for 13 years. The FX5 is my first cannister. I went with the fx5 because of quietness and positive reviews I found everywhere, but I will tell you it is a pain to clean this filter. I have had multiple issues setting up my new tank which has required me to open the FX5 multiple times. This is not an easy task. Also, I consistently get air trapped in the filter so it makes lots of noise which takes time to get out. I cannot yet talk to the effectiveness of the filter, but I will tell you that from a convenience perspective this filter is a pain.
