Yes, sponges are mechanical, stars are bio, meaning the beneficial bacteria (bb) will inhabit the stars and colonize, they will eventually convert ammonia to nitrite then you grow the kind that converts nitrite to nitrate which is easily removed thru water changes, nitrate being the least toxic out of the 3.

If you dont have a test kit grab an api fw master test kit!

The stock fx5 sponges are a larger pours per inch (ppi) meaning they dont trap the finer particles but on ebay you can find smaller ppi blocks, so you could always put the 3 smaller ppi bricks on the top to polish your water just a tad better, not necessary tho, i run stock sponges and it does the job just fine.

Btw 160$+ is a little steep, that link i gave you was half that!

Matrix is very dense and not designed specifically for canisters unlike api chem stars which last forever. Although matrix is a great bio media imo its better suited for sumps, wetdry, hob etc.

Bio max wont last forever, so replacing them eventually is necessary.

i disagree about matrix having to be replaced this is what printed on seachem website... "Pond Matrix™ should never need replacing" and i have it in both my filters and thats like saying gravel will wear out being in a canister ... yea maybe after 20years lol, i'll bet that matrix will outlast chemstars hands down ... and it also says thi on there website about it in a canister .... Matrix™ may be placed in any kind of filter, and is particularly effective in a canister filter. Matrix™ is sufficiently large that no filter bag should be required for most applications. Matrix™ works well in drip tray systems, but you may find that the larger Pond Matrix™ is better suited for such applications... basically ANYTHING is better suited for a sump as canister slosh stuff inside around...

Never said matrix breaks down, just said its very dense and for canisters that will slow down gph, i said ceramic media will eventually break down. Chem stars were designed for canisters, i've used a lot of bios out there, most happy with chem stars.

Ive heard good things about matrix

Your not going to lose hundreds of gph, but think of 3 trays full of pea gravel, the fx5 sucks down all those baskets to the impeller, now think of all 3 baskets full of lose stars that float.... Difference isnt much and each media is exceptional but with denser medias you may be losing 20-50gph apprx but who knows.
