i just cleaned my FX 6 for the first time. It is blowing a ton of air bubbles. I know that it does this then **** off while it purged all the air from the canister but how long does this typically go on for. About half hour at this point.

mine blows air bubbles for like 30 seconds.

Make sure:

-You pre-filled the unit before turning it back on
-Your inlet and outlet valves are open
-All of the seals are tight

I filled it by opening the incoming tube back up after reattaching. I could hear the water rushing back into the canister.
It is better this morning. It was definitely blowing air bubbles for more than 30 seconds.....just over an hour.
Hmmmm. Wonder why it took mine so long.

Just fill the canister with conditioned tap water to the top next time before hooking up your hoses. You’re probably doing a water change anyway. As far as it shutting off, the FX Series are made to do this after it runs for a minute. It will then purge itself and fire back up within five minutes. You’ll find doing it this way, your air bubble problems should go away.

I have done it both ways and prefilling the filter with water before placing the lid on has always meant less air to purge. I understand these pumps can be ran dry a short time without damage, but I'm from the old school and water pumps running dry is just a bad idea, and I'm to darn old to change now. Also make sure all your connections are snugged up tight as they can suck air into the filter as well.

Thanks all. Next time I clean I will fill canister prior to replacing. Hopefully this helps. Appreciate the insight.

I’m going to say check where the rubber goes around the hose on the intake. If that’s above the waterline it will suck air if it’s not tight. Also make sure there’s no slack in the lines as that will make the canister work harder especially the FX6 for some reason the fx5 has less trouble with extra slack in the lines.

I have had mine a few years and never prefill before hooking up. I do let the siphon fill until the can is full then plug it in. No problems with bubbles
