No, leave the FX6 intake strainer on intake pipe and fit the sponge or pre-filter around the outside of the strainer.

I'm not sure if that pre-filter will be large enough to completely cover the intake strainer. You will probably need to modify the sponge to slip over the strainer, possibly even cutting it in half and using rubber bands or zip ties to fasten it to the intake strainer.

I do not use any pre-filter sponges on my canister filters as they clog too quickly so you may want to wait for suggestions from others.
