Fx6 vs used 2262

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I run 3 FX6 on various tanks including a 125 and 135 and am very happy with their performance. I dont have any experience with the Eheim. I have the fluvals full of matrix and clean them around once a month.

Is it a necessity to clean them every month? From reading some previous posts on the 2262 (Harley K etc) it looks like the eheim has a significantly longer service time if it is set up right. I don't mind servicing a filter every month (I do it currently) but I figure the less you disturb you bb the better off they are.

I used to love the fx5 but lately I'm digging my eheims more, I have two fx on a 150 bare bottom minimal stocking and water stays cloudy, the media trays in the fx aren't great and it's more for bio and sucks at mechanical. The eheims are better for both

Wow I thought the fluval was supposed to be great at mechanical filtration. Guess not. Anyone wanna stick up for the fluval? Lol

I have my 2262 on a fairly heavily stocked 120. I clean mine every 6-8 weeks.

That sounds about right. My 150 is moderately stocked and has a Marineland c 360 (all meachinal) and fluval 306 (50/50 bio / mech) already running. My tap water has an abnormally high amount of ammonia at 2 ppm which is the main reason why I want such a large filter. I want to get the ammonia levels down asap after a wc.

I have a C-360 as well. It's completely filled with bio with a Sunsun pre filter with sponges for mechanical. I clean the prefilter every 6-8 weeks as well.

So the eheim basically has the same cleaning schedule as any other canister set up for bio?

Cleaning schedules will vary depending on fish stocking and feeding levels as well as types/amount of filter media.

I definitely recommend some type of mechanical filter media prior to bio-media to trap particles and avoid fouling the bio-media.

Definitely check out Harley K's thread on his filter set up, I know I've also posted how I set mine up.

Ya I think I've read every 2262 thread Harley ever posted lol! I was thinking about doing a combo of the bonded blue filter pad and filter floss / stuffing. I'll have to check out your post too!

Any thoughts on using purigen in between my mech and bio media? I know it will get clogged really fast but I have a lot of it on hand. Or should I just use it as the final stage?
