I've had my FX6 running for a few weeks on my 4x2x2 tank, works great. Super quiet. There's plenty of media space, I have set up:

Top tray: Fluval foam pads
Middle tray: Fluval bio rings and Matrix
Lower tray: Purigen and a polishing pad

How do you like those foam pads that now come with the FX6 been thinking about buying them for the FX 5 .. do they get plugged easy?

Sorry for the derail

I use bare bottom and depending on stock at the time I completely clean te filter once every few months all the way up to once a year but I never throw away biomax and I only rotate throwing away sponges

Waste turning into sand ? Can you expand on this ? Never knew this is how sand is made ....

You will only notice this in a relatively lightly stocked tank, but it is always happening. I only clean my cannisters about once a year. Bare bottom tanks. I use Rid X in my tanks, which you can read about in the sticky about pro-biotics. The waste, including the fiberous waste will be completely consumed by bacteria. All that is left is some black liquid that is slightly thick and sticks to the filter material and sit on the bottom along with some very fine minerals that precipitate. These are minerals that can't be consumed by bacteria. It is very fine sand. I think this is addressed in the same sticky.

Rodger how do you prevent these sand particles from messing with the impellar ?

They are pretty much stuck in the goo to the bottom. They aren't a problem until you clean the filter. Nearly impossible to rinse them all out.

Thanks Rodger....

jaws7777.... I am not Rodger...but I have an FX6.

When I clean the filter, do not add water and swirl it around. The sand particles will get into the impeller area....you do not want to do this.

I will tilt the canister housing with the impeller motor on the highest point. Then I will get a water hose and spray the goo, sand, debris...being careful not to direct any of these in the impeller area. I have done this with an old FX5 and now with FX6....never have a problem.

I never have any issues with sand getting into the impeller area while canister is running. But if you do, folks have used pre-filter placed in the intake to stop sand from getting into the canister to begin with.

Thanks for the tip chopsteeks will def 're read this thread once its up and running
