Today I woke up at 4 AM unable to fall back asleep. I decided at around 5 I could do an early morning feeding for my FW fish. At 7 I turned on the brackish tank and noticed that my dragon goby was where the moray eel normally is.

I looked around and didn't see the eel. I never eel proofed my tank so I looked behind the buffet table that the tank is on and saw nothing. I see under another table a few feet away the moray eel coiled up on a CD.

He looked dead, but he was still slimy so I poked him and he gasped!

I quickly threw him in the brackish tank and he suddenly spazzed out and hid in his cave.

He is poking his head out and doing that moray eel thing but still breathing heavily and has bits of stuff from the carpet on him. I am going to wait until he calms down to take it off.

The odd part is, he could have not got out of the filter cut out in the back and got through the junk behind the buffet table, so he must have pushed up the front lid and got out. Either way, today I am going to get some screening and eel proof the back of the tank as well as get some rocks for the lid at night.

Yep, unless I had the water level down about 2", mine would always get out. It's amazing how long they can live out of water.

That is horrible, but awesome that he is still alive. Hope he recovers fully and good luck.

lol good stuff. Has he taken food yet? and I'm curious to what you feed. I feed mine market shrimp and tilapia and very rarely I'll give them some live feeders.

Mine gets feeders when I forget to defrost smelt for him. For some reason he won't eat the shrimp I got him. I use raw shrimp and I take off the shell and tail but he doesn't seem to realize that I want him to eat it.

I am going to wait until tonight to feed him. The smelt are large, but when he just gets feeders I bet he jumps out looking for more food.

Good stuff and thanks for sharing, I might look into the smelt. The easiest way I found to get mine to eat was bouncing the shrimp around on a coathanger in front of them until they realized it was food. Always interested in new foods/healthier diets for my fish.

Feeders are the absolute worst food to feed a fish, especially a SW one:
