Ga Aquarium Filtration

i read they don't do water changes, they just do RO top of for evaporation and then probably add water for splashes or backflush losses or so.
My question though do they do anything else? Protein skimmer for organics, sand filter for bio conversion, anaerobic denitrator for nitrate...is that it? Is there any other type of operation? Do they do something to manage or dose micro nutrients or dissolved salts or something?? Ya know Ca, Mg, etc.
