Galvanized safe for fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i know people that have cemented over first and then put the liner down so leaks are less of a problem... never understood that. because i think you need to wait for a while before concrete stops leaching bad chems into water

For 1/5th the cost of a liner, you can paint the interior surfaces with epoxy paint. You can find it in an assortment of colors (to highlight the fish) or you can get it in clear. Also from aquaticeco.

Depending on how much value you place on your time, back, and hands.

Who said anything about backs or hands? I'd rent me a bobcat, baby!!!:headbang2

If I do a liner it will be 11'x15' with the deepest part being about 4'. No way I'm doing that by hand. But I was just seeing if the galvanized tank was as easy as it seemed. Looks like it's not, so I'll just stick with my liner idea.

So get some re-bar and call up a gunite company. Did I tell you I use to build swimming pools? I still have a wholesale account :D And I have all of the free two inch pvc plumbing you will possibly need. Just get it out of my back yard...PLEASE!

I'm not going that far with it. Now I just plan on digging a big hole, throwing some stuff down there to protect the liner, then the liner. Then I'll just do the typical pond stuff. You know, waterfall, rocks, plants, fish, hammock, beer, cigar, Buffet.:D

That would just be adding to the cost and it wouldn't be as big as I'd want if I were to use a liner. I was looking into the galvanized stock tank just because it's fast and cheap, but not if I have to do all kinds of prep work too.

Galvanized is not the way to go. It is harmful to fish and will rust apart. There are some pretty big plastic stock tanks that are cheap and easy. I have seen them at farm supply stores or independant companies that make plastic holding tanks etc. Have seen them over 1000 gallons.

also, I am thinking about getting a fiberglass pool and using that as apond. They don't leech any chemicals and are fairly cheap especially it you do most the work your self. You can buy them in any size and shape and also buy them in different colors besides white. I am thinking of getting one about 10ft by 12ft and is 5 feet deep at deepest and 3.5 at shallow. They deliver it on a trailer behind a normal pickup truck and you can lift it with a few people.
