Originally, putting my large (220g) tank into my apartment was predicated by the idea that I live in a big, hefty concrete building built by NYC and should have no weight problems.
Well I had a leak in some plumbing and a bunch of water got under my floor, warping the wood, but the warping continued as it dried.
Beginning to worry, I sent an architect a diagram of the room with my tank footprints and weight, and was informed that I'm almost certainly over weight capacity, and if the water weakened the slab at all, I could be dangerously so. Also, I've been advised to run my big tank at half capacity (which will be difficult because it's a double drilled tank with a sump) and I'm obviously pretty bummed.
The architect is still doing some research and there's a slight chance he might reverse what he said given an engineer's input, but I'm not hopeful.
So the long and short of this whole tale is that I'm going to probably have to get rid of my big/big-growing fish. I'm planning on giving away most of the fish to one or a couple of fish stores, but it wouldn't hurt to recover a little $ from this. I need to pay to have my floors redone, after all.
THIS IS NOT A SALE THREAD--but--to garner interest for a potential one I may post tonight/tomorrow, please PM me if you'd be interested in picking up any of the following in NYC this weekend. They're all gonna go for about 1/3-1/4 what I paid.
15-16'' Mbu puffer
11'' Albino Wels Catfish
12'' Tigrinus Catfish
9'' Apparent pair of Adonis plecos
11''/6'' M/F Paratilapia sp. Andapa pair (the male is gorgeous and I raised him from 2'' and it's KILLING me to lose this fish)
11'' Tropical Gar (weird tail growth back after injury)
10'' "I Can't Believe It's Not Platinum!" Jardini (has no colors but silver and gray)
10'' Cognicus/Lap Bichirs
2x 5'' NTT Dats
6'' Nice markings IT Dat
And if I can't find a way to house him I might give up my prized "Zaire Blue" frontosa, Maurice.
After rehousing the fish, I'll be getting rid of the actual 220g (6'x2'), stand, lights, sump, pumps, Eheim 2262 full of media, driftwood, plants, and CO2 setup.
I've tried my best to be a responsible fish keeper, and obviously I can't continue to do so if my tank itself is irresponsible. I can't even begin to describe how much this sucks on so many levels. Hopefully a few of you can at least benefit from my loss--I'll be doing my best to keep my fish that don't grow as large, and hopefully when I move some day I'll be able to build a safer, much more monstrous tank.
