Dumbledore was one of the most powerful wizards of all time. He beat Grindelwald, who possessed the Elder wand at the time, and even from beyond the grave, he left things so that Harry could defeat the Dark Lord. Probably most importantly, he himself was greatly attracted to power, much like Voldemort was, but managed to master his urges for the remainder of his life, and remain within the Light.
