I'm pretty sure they'll be alright.:chillpill:

you can ask people to chill all you want, and that's cool (no pun intended). but the gar will continue to grow until it's no longer gape limited regarding predation on the ctenopoma...now the ctenos can get pretty good size, but unless you can keep it at a rate faster than the gar, then it will likely be eaten or killed off when the gar tries. it's just not a wise combo.--

I mean for the time being, until he can go with my big monsters.

"perhaps asking if anyone has kept these fish together as adults is a better way to word it"

I have kept both of these fish together as adults for a while. I have had no problems whatsoever and have seen nothing that would lead me to believe that this combo would ever cause any problems. And my fire eel is active and out all the time-- really, as long as one isn't much bigger than the other, I'd be extremely, extremely surprised if something happened. But maybe it's better to ask if anyone has ever had anything actually go wrong keeping adult eels and gars together.

This is my guy =D had him now about 1.5 months. Almost doubled in size since I got him it seems >.<

they wont

I also keep a Leopard Ctenopoma with my Florida Gar. Been doing so for a very long time (years: the Leaf Fish is now 6", from 2") and there has never been any problem. They don't even look at one another and the Gar is more than twice the length, maybe three times.

Please realize that some combinations are against the norm and you guys won't always be correct about gar aggression. :D

From what I'm seeing day in and out.. my guy is alot more aggressive then I originally anticipated.. He was sold as a "spotted gar" at the LFS.. which from the keys I concluded him to be a florida gar, went back and purchased him.. Can anyone possibly agree or negate this from my pics? sorry the tank wasn't algae scraped. and I'll try and get some better pics. But some knowledgable input would be much appreciated.. I also did abit of looking about.. and I'm somewhat suspicious I may have a crocodile/hybrid instead. Or is it fairly normal for a florida to put on 3" in approx 1 month? he's left my fire eels alone.. but I put a 6"+ silver arrowana in the tank with him more then half his size .. and came home from a 2 day trip to find him shredded up bad enough I seperated him back into the QT tank. I'm prepared for a florida gar... but I am not prepared for a gator/croc husbandry >.< and with his aggression level would Oscars be a better tank-mate choice for him?

it's a Florida gar, definitely not a hybrid. oscars are generally not good tankmates for gars. hope that helps--

Thanks again for the input Solomon. Any suggestions for other possible tank-mates for this guy? my Fiance is more or less in love with this fish, so he'll be happy to know he's not going to get to big to keep. I'm guessing/thinking to avoid other top-water species. And if the Oscars will be too aggressive, any other mid sized suggestions of mid-water level column dwellers That would be a likely option? I'm gonna do some thread re-con again for compatability for more aggressive gars, but any suggestions would be welcome.

exactly...but should does that mean we give advise based on combinations that are against the norm(exceptions)?
