Gar and Pickerel?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Nope I think around 22-24" is the best you can realistically hope for in a home aquarium.

22-24" is bigger than any redfin or grass pickerel could even pretend to reach. A chain pickerel would reach that size though, easily. I was thinking more along the line of keeping them in the same tank until the gar grows out, which will undoubtedly happen at some point. I should have been more specific.

True, the Gar will eventualy def. outgrow all but the Chain. Gar are really slow growers after 10-14inches or so, not sue about the Pickerel. I personally will be giving it a shot, but I have a large tank, and am willing to take the risks. Now to find some. So far I have a source for Grass pickerel, but he says he wont have any untill June next year! :) If I want some sooner, I have to hope someone has some in the tank at home, and wants to be rid of them.

You can keep pickerel and gar together as long as they are of similar size. Grass/redfin pickerel will reach a size on average around 10 to 12 inches in a tank. And should be fine until the gar reaches a size around 16 to 18 inches. If kept very well fed you can extend this time even longer. But once the gar gets hungry your pickerel would begin to look like food.
You won't find any vendors with pickerel this time of year. You will have to wait until late spring early summer when fry from the spawning season have grown out.

Well, looks like I have one Grass Pickerel all lined up. Wont be here for awhile, but hey at least I found one!

Ouch, just found out that the Pickerel is 3"........ My Gar and Bowfin are all at least 8", maxing out at around 12". Guess he gets his own tank for at least awhile.....

I have an 8 inch longnose in a 210 gal tank, and it bothers nothing, have taught to take hikari floating pellets
