i have a 8''motoro with my 9'' spotted gar and ive never had any problems sometimes they even hang on the bottom together

great, thats the answer i was looking for. what size tank?

my 17" florida gar was fine with all my retics i had...i have seen one guys large ray eat his large gar one time not to long ago...the thing is i hate retic rays now...they have good patterns, but they die to easy and for nothing...heathy and eatting one day dead the next...i have lost 8 of 10 retics i have had and i sold the other 2 so i wouldn't have lost 10 of 10...if you can house it go with the motoro like everyone suggests for a great ray...

honestly, i think i would love a motoro, but as for now i dont think i can realistically house one for life and theres no use.i know i can house my floridas and a retic in my 120 or 125 for a long time and as soon as i move toa house with a finished basement or concrete floors im goin to purchase a 180 minimum. since i dont own my own home, im a little leary on a huge huge tank. im up for the challenge, i feel i know the risks now all around especially about the retics dying way too easy, but ive been watching the one i want for the past 2 months and it looks good and fat and is well, still alive so i think once i get my substrate switched around ill make an attempt. thanks for your help guys

it is a good plan...just don't get to pissed when it just dies...i had a male retic for a few months and it was eatting everything i gave it, growing like a weed...then i turned on the lights to the tank one day and it was dead...i was going to try and breed them...then the mass loss...just a fore warning...if you do get it gl...you could also just get a true hystrix and then you will be fine with you tank plans...just some thoughts from my exp. rays are amazing and i can't wait to get more...i just wouldn't want you to go through the same with my first ray exp. as it is really discuraging and irritating...

thanks for the info sbuse. i finally got my sand today, its the black caribe sea ( i think that was the name) i got it from petsmart. 20lb bags were on sale. i looked at some play sand and saw that 50lbs covers 6sq ft 1 in thick with having 7.5sq ft of tank, i went with 40lbs. both bags were like $37 which is a lot cheaper than my lfs i get my fish so i couldnt pass it up. anyway, i switched everything around and it was basically painless. i thought it was gonna be a huge mess but i just put the sand in a bucket on a slant and put my water hose in it and rinsed til it came clean. i think it was actually easier than my black gravel. anyway, all i (after i took my gravel out) was kept the sand in the bucket and lowered real slow in the tank and slowly dumped it out. let it settle and only a short while later after everything settled mytank is clearing up. and i have about 1/4"-1/2" across my tank. so..... looks like im ready to make a trip to pick up my retic. any last minute advice?

We have eight stingrays in our 360-gallon and they have two 8-9 inch long-nosed gars in there with them. We've had this set up for about a year and a half, and we have never had any problems. Good luck. ;p

Cool, sounds like, on the whole, the Gars would be fine.

Its odd as I originally wanted Gars as well and I was put off by old threads talking about attacks....will have to look back, maybe I was mistaken? I have read about many people keepung Arowanas too and there seems to be mixed advice about that as well, some have lost Aros to Rays and others have lost Rays to Aros, then there are some that get on fine.

I am sure that a big anything, with a big Ray in a small 4foot tank will end up with a worse success rate than a 10 foot tank?

i think its ok...i have a 13" florida gar, 5" motoro, 5 inch retic, 9 inch motoro and 13" motoro...they're all living peacefully...when my pups are still the gar will come and lay in between their eyes...looks cool...pups arent stressed (they're not breathing hard)...I recently found other homes for the pups however the gar and pups lived for approx 3 months with no problems
