It seems as though there is a severe shortage in the availability of the Lep. gar species this year as compared to last year.

I'm a relative newbie to fish keeping (2 years), but it did not take long for native oddballs to become my favorites. During my fist year I got several Bowfins (Totally awesome fish) and numerous Lep. Gar species. They were in every local fish store, LNG, SNG & Floridas.

Now that I have a bit more experience with fish keeping, it has been nearly impossible for me to find Bowfin for sale, and the extremely limited local access to Lep. species Gar has caused the price to venture into the ludicrous range. $30+ for a juvi?

What happened?

Gar availability can be very seasonal at times. to $30 is not bad for a healthy juvenile gar. Try snookn21 on here he had some bowfins a while back. He also usally has alot of gars.

It has been a strange season, with excessive rainfall causing flooding all across the country through most of the spring. I am guessing this has caused collecting issues.

also we have a long drought in Texas and the areas around so a lot of young fish died!

I was talking to my firned who does wetland seed collection in the summer..a nd he's commented that the weather in WI has been odd.. but compared to last year a bumper crop for him. He did mention the waters are higher and some species are breeding abit outside their norm ( he runs into alot of fry in the areas he collects plants along)

I think part of it is Gar are slowly becomeing more desirable in the trade.. I use to walk into justa bout any LFS and see at least 1 gar for sale... now they seem to sell the same week they come in. But doesn't sound like the collection ect are produceing any more for the trade yet.? also the LFS around here don't get anything but floridas on their lists or gators... last LNG I saw was a few yrs old I'm sure.
