that's definitely a great pic, but the set-up will not work long term...as the gar grows (and the silver) aggression will increase...gars can't ignore silvery fish, so the Bala's will likely be shredded, and the pearl gouramis won't grow nearly as fast or large as their tankmates. as long as you are ready to separate them as they grow you should be ok--

i think it depends more on the gar...my 18" fl has been with silver fish all its life with only one reaction bite on a smaller silver aro...the bite happened when the aro lunged at some food infront of the gars nose...my gar has been with, tinfoils, balas, silver aros, white bass, clown knife, ect...only the one incedent witch the gar instantly spit the aro out...baby catfish are another story though...

not that i discredit your knowladge, but i highly dought that i have the only gar that goes well with silver fish, pbass and anything else that 'dosen't work long term' with gars...

it does depend on the individual fish, however, the general rule is what it's best to go by than the exception...in this case, your gar is an exception and should not be taken as the rule. it's great that it has worked for you, but statistics say otherwise in these situations (hence, in giving advice to others, being conservative is the more responsible course of action).

i've kept many gars and in the vast majority of cases the silver fish "rule" holds up and is inadvisable--
