Hi all,

I have recently been discussing with xander about gar feeding.
Just like to listen to more feedback on this matter.

Xander was saying that we should not over feed a gar.
Over feeding will result in a explosive growth rate, however, it will also lead to a smaller max size.

So I would like to here this matter from the others here.

Listen to Xander...

Over feeding can also lead to fatty deposits in the fish and just like hung dang said it can lead to a shorter lifespan.

First of all, let me assure u guys that I do listen to Xander. Just that I wish to find out more about the rationale behind it.
That leads me to the 2nd question on how much is enough and how much is overfeeding.
With the condition that my gators are in a pond and not in the tank, and so they are considered to be able to be more active compared to tank condition.
3rdly, I tried to feed the gators less but the problem arise when I want to feed the rtcs and before the food reach the bottom, the gators will zoom in to grab the food.

Well that would be Sol and I that did this experimentation and developed it.. Not so much Xander but he is correct in what he says about it. We have outlined this in quite a few posts. We have found that slowed or punctuated growth works better in the long run than "Powerfeeding" for immediate growth. I have No idea why the shorter lifespan thing was added here as that has nothing to do with our work and there is ZERO evidence for it really...It can cause some issues but not all fatal.

That is tough to determine... I do not own your fish you do.. And it is not really possible for one to tell you this. You need to determine this.

I'm at a loss what your asking here..There is little difference between a fish in a tank or a fish in a pond.

Gator gars and Tankmates?....... Yeah not going there again as it seems few get the point of NONE being the best coarse....:turtle:

well, the shorter lifespan that I brought up is from those scientist that would apply to all fish, not just gar! they said if you keep them in warmer temperature, feed them more, then they will grow faster and have a shorter life! Since gar can live very long, experimenting that thing is gonna take some time!

The pond thing is from john's post on having fatty deposit. I guess it will make a diff because under most tank condition, inactivity will cause fishes to gain fatty deposits. Example a construction worker will need more food compared to a person that works in the office.
As for their tank mates, I did not com them without due research from all available information to me.

So the question on how much is too much still remain unanswered.
Will they stop eating when they are full or will they take in more then they can eat?
Do we calculate the maximum food they can eat at 1 time and 1/2 the amount or 1/4 the amount?
If this cannot be answered, then during the experiment, what is the stats that u and sol recorded?
I'm just asking for a reference, please do not get worked up, I'm not challenging anyone here, just seeking to come out with something that is best for my gars.

Oh, BTW, I have tried searching using gar over feeding using the search tool and a lot of threads except one on actual feeding came up.

IMO only.

Will feeding less but more times a day or feed the same amount once in 2 days?

Maybe try throwing a fair amount of food around the pond so everyone will have a fair share all the time.

Cheers!
