gar feeding discussion

Listen to Richard (Pejelajarto) and Xander...

Oh, BTW, I have tried searching using gar over feeding using the search tool and a lot of threads except one on actual feeding came up.

The search tool is useless unless you used "Advanced Search" and use more defined search parameters.

Xander knows what he's doing.. as does Pej... as always richard puts a blunt and honest answer to you... he doesn't own your fish.. you do... I've found with my own gar that feeding them YoY it's pretty much almost impossible to "over-feed" them.. But my own choice in foods ect... play just as important a role as what I feed, how often ect... Fish do not metabolize as humans do... when keepers rationalize their pets feeding compareing it to their own is when you run into issues often times.. But on that note.. one comparable I find helpful in explaining to many customers ( I worked in the pet trade for 10 yrs before recently leaving to have a kid) Is If you ate MCDonalds every day... Vs your friend who ate "healthy foods" but you both weighed approx the same.. you would still have great variances in over-all health, what you ate and how much you ate.

imo most fish ( includeing gar, but Pej and Sol as well as Xander have more specific knowledge to gars then I def do.) can't be "over-fed" on a healthy well-balanced diet until they are "Mature" But just like most other pets an improper diet, houseing, ect can and will contribute to "Over-feeding"

All my predetory fish go threw a binge/fast lifestyle and I've found it to be most beneficial to over-all health and longevity. Each Fish/Tank has it's own customized feeding routine/regime.

But it really all boils down to learning your fish as Richard stated.

Firstly, if I do not take Xander, Pej and Sol advices seriously, I would not have posted here in the firstly place... Do I give people the impression that I don't? If yes, then I apologies to them.
And let me clear this now. I totally respect them for their knowledge.
I know fishes are not humans as all animals have their own nutritional guildlines.
For my yoy dogs, I feed them 3 meals a day and 1 meal for adults. Amounts are stated in the packaging clearly.
For young gators, I feed them 2 meals a day, now that they are 2', I cut down to 1. Will cut down to 1 every 2 days eventually when they matured. From my research, it should be 1 year old.
Is this correct?

And so, how much grams of fish per meal should I feed before its considered unhealthy? That's what I want to clear up. Its my fish so I decide does not tell me the answer. How do I listen when there is no answer?

sounds good. i think what Joo is looking for are references on how much he should be feeding his adult gators.

Richard, maybe you could shed some light on your feeding regime for sub-adult and adult gators under your care? for reference, i too am curious actually.

Under one year fed daily or at least supplied with food at all times.
two to four year fed every other day in Spring Summer, Every three or four days Fall winter (I do however lower temps Fall and winter)
Four to----- Every three to four days spring summer, once a week winter.

Giving amount to feed is not practical.. You have to go by your individual fish.

and no feeding if the gar is in outdoor pond and temperature drop below 50F, right?

have to ask, if my fish are not fed at least once every 2 days, aggression starts to be displayed. how do you counter this issue (if faced at all)?

thanks for the info though, it is making me reconsider my feeding regime, once i find a way to curb aggression.

The drop in temperature might help with the aggression since the gars will become less active at a lower temperature.
