first instinct is no, definitely not for life...if only based on water volume and therefore WQ issues (especially with other fishes assumed present). what are the dimensions of the 56 cube? it just wouldn't really be long enough for the gar, and a big gar in a space like that would likely break its back--
--solomon

PS - the cube could work as a temporary home, probably for a year or so give or take (more likely take).

not 100 percent on deminsions but a buddy of mine has one with 12 guaramis*cant spell*
at least 2 foot going back. its called a cube but it aint a true cube

I know but he asked what about a needle fish
hence why i called them needle fish

55g could house a Fl/spotted for several months, possibly the first year but doubtful since those standard tanks are only 12" wide. when the gar reaches about 8" you should be moving it into a wider tank, preferably 18-24". for a Fl/spotted a 24" wide tank should house it for most of its life, although this may need to be modified based on the individual.

xander - before you repost your capsule post again, please correct the (ironic) misspelling of discrepancy :) --
--solomon

:D will do. i'm hoping the "capsule" is relatively accurate, any feedback?

I'm going to say no as well. Could it survive...possibly. Either way it would be a poor quality of life for the fish.

Edit: I looked one up online and a 60 gallon cube is 24x24x24...and adult fish would only be able to rotate on an axis and move up and down. Would be a fine growout, but a very poor lifelong environment.

thanks demjor
might get a another gar and use his as a grow out tank (he going to give me it soon)

you can probably put false gar - needle fish in there.
looks similar to gars, don't grow nearly as big.
very interesting to watch though.
they love the lights off and watching them eat feeders is pretty cool.
don't recommend anything else with them other than small fish
that they can't fit in there mouths.
g danios - dollars - lots of stuff.

no false gar comes close to a real gar IMO...
