I'm looking to buy a gar for 150. I don't want a gar that gets to "Aligator" capacity. Any ideas what would be best for a South American tank?

Thanks.

Gars do not live in South America so how would that be a "Biotope"

Anyhow without knowing what you plan on putting in there I'm hesitant to suggest anything.

exactly. although if you were looking for the closest species geographically speaking, the tropical gar would be your best bet...and size-wise is probably one of the best gars for the home aquaria anyway--

Sorry...I should have been more descriptive.

My tank mainly consists of South American Cichlids. I have an Oscar, a couple of severums, a couple of talking cats, plecos, and I'm thinking of an electric blue jack dempsey. I also have a large synodontis eupterus (the one African fish in my tank).

I saw a Mosaic Gar in my lfs...does anyone think that would be a problem?

a mosaic is a spotted pike characin. not a true gar but it may work for you. i would be worried about putting a true gar in with a bunch of cichlids. they may not get along depending on size that could go either way. it also sounds like you have plenty of fish in the 150. a true gar may overcrowd it.

Thanks!!

That's what I was wondering. I know I'm pretty much maxed out for the 150 and I thought a gar may be too much. Maybe I'll look into the characins instead. Thanks for the info.

I have a Florida Gar in a 150 with my Red Devil and Dovii and have to toss in at least a dozen feeders at a time just so my Gar will get at least one or two feeders. Even if I load their mouths with nighcrawlers they still try to hog all of the feeders. They are such pigs!
