Gar for my 220?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Agreed Florida gar will do nicely in a 220. You can keep them with a wide variety if tank mates as they are relatively peaceful to anything that won't fit in its mouth

I have my florida in a 225 5x3x2 wide, hes doing great. Never bothers his tank mates and none of them bother him. hes wild caught so he only eats feeders but I'm sure I can wean him onto something eventually. He shares the tank with a giant gourami, chocolate cichlid, tinfoil barbs, a big common pleco, an asian upside down catfish, a clown knife and some bichirs.

I don't have any trouble except for the gourami and chocolate constantly trying to decide who is more powerful.

essentially a 180 but taller.. so 6x2 footprint... but yes a florida would be good in that size tank... as for tanmkmates... i would go to the gar subforum and read threw the stickies before adding fish to your tank... alot of fish do not make good tank-mates for gar... and imo gar are best left as the "top/mid" dwelelrs to their tanks. atm I have a group of gar in my 120 4x2 footprint and the floridas are 2+yrs now and doing great. silver fish and cichlids are "at your own risk" sometimes they work.. but more often then not they don't... persnoally I keep spiney eels, and stingrays with my gar... and some people have had bad experiences with this combo... but for my fish and their personalities they work. FLG are the least aggressive gar species imo, and co-hab usually just fine with other fish of appropriate size, gar eat anything and everything small enough to fit in their mouthes regaurdless of aggression ect. once you start talking gators,trops,cubans... then "aggression" is more of an issue... flg aren't aggressive like cichlids... so this is why they make a bad mix long term... cichlids grow up and start claiming territories, ime this is when the gar gets the bad end of the deal.

In a nutshell. read the gar sunbforum stickies and a few threads.. and make your own choices.

Mine is 2' feet thick 30" inches tall and 6' feet long. And the tank mates would be something like this.
1 Florida Gar
1 Jardini Arowana
1 Common Pleco
3 Peacock Bass
1 Ornate Bichir
2 Senegal Bichirs
1 Lima Shovel Nose Catfish
For filtration I have 2 Cascade 1500 Canisters and 1 AC 110.

The only thing that stays relatively small are the two Senegal bichirs. So it might take pellets and if not do you guys think it will take dead things like silver sides and shrimp?
