Gar for my 220?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I keep mine with senegal bichir and 2 ornates no problem there.
even though plecos are supposed to make bad tankmates for them my two get on great and even sit next to eachother all cozy. You can't keep a jardini with anything except an empty tank!

I've seen them with other fish in YouTube videos so I'm going to get all the other fish I listed first and let them grow for a while and then add the Jardini hopefully around 6 inches and I'm thinking that if he grows up with them by the time he gets big enough to harm my other fish he will tolerate them. If not i will just rehome the Arow. If that's the case how many Gars could work in the 220 with them as the center piece?

sounds like you have done research and have a plan so sure good luck with it, I just have heard a lot of bad stories about Jardini's but I know that they can sometimes work. I just didn't want you to lose all your stock! with 2' width I guess I would go with 3 florida gars? I'm not really an expert though. because my tank is 3' wide my gar has a lot of room to maneuvre even though he isn't fully grown.

Yeah if the Jardini doesn't work I think 3 would look great but if it does I will only get 1. With the Jardini and bass the Mid and Top levels of the tank will be pretty full but from what I've seen the gars kinda just hover a lot right?

mine is 15" and spends a lot of time just laying around still, like bichirs. Once every 30 minutes or so he will get up and swim around, take a gulp or air or explore. They aren't particularly active fish but I wouldn't say that they are boring. They just aren't constantly moving like say barbs for instance.

Ok yeah I don't mind that. Arowanas are very active so the extra swimming space for my Jar would be great. Would this be a good diet?
Carnivore Pellets as a staple
1 Shrimp every night
And then maybe 3 times a week beef heart, silver sides, and Tilapia.
Then once every two weeks a few feeders?

Mine is 2' feet thick 30" inches tall and 6' feet long. And the tank mates would be something like this.
1 Florida Gar
1 Jardini Arowana
1 Common Pleco
3 Peacock Bass
1 Ornate Bichir
2 Senegal Bichirs
1 Lima Shovel Nose Catfish
For filtration I have 2 Cascade 1500 Canisters and 1 AC 110.

Jardini is a horrible tankmate idea.
Common pleco is also a horrible tankmate idea.
Peacock bass is not recommended, very aggressive feeders. could result in a broken back/dead gar.
Bichirs are fine.
Shovelnose coule go either way. Possible predation either way dependin gon what is bigger.

Overall your list is a terrible idea for gars.

I'd recommend reading the stickies in the gar forum for more information about proper care of gars.

Beat me too it Kevin... Oh and floridas generally get 18" in captivity and if well taken care of can hit the 24"+ mark.. a few kept in large tanks on here are that big and also more then a few years old. They will also get 14" the first year... so a fast initial grower.

arrowana and gar are generally a bad idea to begin with... add atop of that a notoriousely aggressive species... and imo you have a 10% success rate.. which will end up with a dead gar or arrowana before you can stop it.

What's wrong with a Pleco? And you could have just told me with out being a d*ck.

Ok thanks. Looks like a gar won't end up working. : /
