Gar growth rate

At the LFS, i found a 4" "South American Gar" that looks awsome and is taking frozen without a problem, along with some similiar sized polypterus. I'm really tempted to buy them and grow them out and setup a gar pond down the road but it probably wouldnt be for at least a year. Do gars grow slow or are they rapid growers?

Not sure about "south American gars" but one of my gattor gars has grown 13cm in 3 weeks... we can see the bloody thing growing atm !

in some cases it may work but some equal disaster. really it depends on the individual fish. like most people say its not a good idea to keep oscars with gars but i keep 2 with my florida/spotted with no problems as of now. but i also know that something could happen at any time. and i keep close eye on them. im not a gar expert but most experts will say that keeping cichlids with them is not a good idea.

i have a 14" spotted gar in with 2 7 inch oscars and 2 6 inch red devils. all the fish fight amongst themselves a lot but no one ever bothers the gar. he is a very kind and gentle fish and gets along very well, not sure if its because of his size or what.

That is very fast ... impressive. what did you feed? heheheheheh special roids?
